SUMMARY:
Under general direction, directs the daily operations of student residence life. Develops and implements strategic plans, sets department goals, and monitors progress. Serves as a resource and advisor for students. Acts as a liaison between the public, internal departments and agencies, and prospective students. Manages professional, administrative, and student employees.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; recruits, employs, trains, supervises, and evaluates unit staff.
  • Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates operational effectiveness; effects changes required for improvement.
  • Oversees student programs that maintain and enhance the quality of on-campus residence life; directs area residence life officers and student resident advisors, and develops and/or monitors educational, recreational, and/or social programs and services for student residents.
  • Interacts with students as a resource person and advisor.
  • Develops and directs department activities in the areas of crisis management, mediation and dispute resolution, and/or student discipline.
  • Reviews student resident appeals of decisions made by Area Residence Life Officers, including contract terminations.
  • Directs department crisis management program.
  • Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.
  • Oversees the overall operations of unit(s) reporting to this position.
  • Represents the University to various institutional divisions as well as externally to media, government agencies, funding agencies, students, and/or the general public/local community.
  • Recommends and participates in the development of University policies and procedures; may serve on university planning and policy-making committees.
  • Plans, develops, and implements strategies for generating resources and/or revenues for the organization.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree with 3 to 5 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele and/or media sources.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to identify and secure alternative funding/revenue sources.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and student personnel administration.
  • Knowledge of academic standards governing student probation, suspension, and/or expulsion.
  • Conflict resolution and/or mediation skills.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Ability to coordinate quality assurance programs in area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of new student assimilation issues.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns.
  • Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Skill in establishing, directing and enforcing policies and regulations which pertain to campus life and to student development.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Ability to establish and direct crisis management services, activities, and procedures for distressed students.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of student support programs and services.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
